Felgenschaden erfordert komplettes neues Rad + Motor?

Beitrag von e-scooter »

Hi!

I am an e-scooter enthusiast from The Netherlands. We recently purchased a new Emco Novax from Germany, one of the latest on sale. Regrettably, the scooter got a flat tire at 500km and when driving off the road it hit an obstacle causing rim damage (felgen schaden).

Normally, a new rim costs about 100-150 euro, but our Emco dealer has stated that replacing the rim isn't possible and that the only option available is to replace the complete wheel + motor costing 1500 euro including repair costs.

I hereby want to inform if it is correct that rim damage for Emco scooters / electric scooters with an in-wheel motor will require a complete new wheel + motor when the rim is damaged.

In The Netherlands there is just 1 company that is able to repair rims while other companies aren't able to. They confirmed that they could repair the rim dent very well but because the motor is in the wheel, they are not able to. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the motor from the rim?

Thanks in advance for the information!

I suppose rim damage requires motor replacement on most electric scooters (not only Emco), because the motor is part of the rim. Actually, the motor is the rim. The fact that the Novax has a front motor causes additional problems, because when the scooter hits an obstacle, in most cases the front wheel rather than the rear wheel is affected.

Greetings

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the insights! The Emco Novax however has a rear-wheel motor.

There are a lot of bolts visible on the motor. It appears that the outer layer is a separate part. Does anyone know if it is possible / safe to unscrew the outer layer of the rim so that it can be repaired by a rim repair company?

I am not sure why the rim repair shop thinks they cannot repair the rear rim with the motor inside. Ist is still quite a standard alumiminium rim, after all...
You would however need to detach the Motor/Wheel from the rear fork and also detach the cables from the controller (three phases and a 5-Pin connector for the Hall-switches). Only then can the tire be taken off and the rim worked on.
Ensure you document all the cable colours BEFORE you disassemble so you can propperly reconnect them to the controller.

The tire place just needs slightly higher clamping jaws, and the wheel should be placed on the turntable with the shaft at the top where the cables come out. One person must hold that shaft still (with a vice grip or wrench) while the machine takes the tire off, else the cables will suffer damage.

Only if you want / need to disassemble the motor you will have open all those screws, get that lid off while carefully threading the cable through the lid's bearing, and maybe need to disassemble the 5 pin connector as it will most probably not fit through the bearing.

Once you are that far set the other end of the motor shaft on the floor, maybe on a piece of wooden board to ensure no damage to the thread, and then apply your whole weight to the rim / tire to free it from the stator and the monstrous magnets in the rim. Continue to firmly hold down the rim while someone else lifts the stator completely out of the rotor/rim.

BEWARE: only do this if you REALLY know what you are doing, the magnets are immensly powerful can easily cause the worst crushing injuries to fingers and the like, or even cut one off!!!

It might be a good idea to cover the magnets inside the rim with some packaging tape in order to keep them clean from any iron or steel chips that might come close. You will never be able completely clean off any iron powder that the magnets attract!

Now you have a rim like the rim shop knows and they can work on it without worries.

Re-assembly goes the other way round: firmly place and press the rim to the ground while another person sets the cable-less axle with stator through the rotor's bearing and seal, and then as slowly and controllably as possible gently reduce the downforce until the magnets pull in the stator with might.
When you retighten the lid on the other side be prepared for multiple magnetic jerks with every bolt you screw down. Once they are fully tightend the rotor should once again cog freely around the axles without any magnets rubbing on the stator.

Or contact Krain like Peter suggested :D

Sorry, I mistook the Novax for the Novette

I also think that it's possible to disassemble the wheel and replace the rim by following Mathias' (MERollers) advices.

Thank you very much for the valuable information! The rim repair company (Wheeltrim BV, Nijkerk) has offered to try it. The information in this topic may be crucial.

A side note for potential other Dutch electric scooter owners with the same problem: I wrote over 10 rim repair companies and 70% replied that Wheeltrim BV might be a company able to do it.
