E-Odin - spare part thoughts / Ersatzteilüberlegungen

My bike with added battery and more powerful controller has suddenly become a much more useful bike to me.

So I hope my days with it will be many.

What does the forum think about the future of parts, and what are the essential parts to those not needed or replace.

In other words, what would you 'stock' as items in a box, to make sure you can carry on using the bike?

What CAN be repaired?

1. Electronics; We are likely to find replacements for the battery and the controller. These are universal so I think, one way or another, we can find alternatives.

2. Display; I think there are alternative displays that can be matched up with alternative controllers. We've had a few threads about that here, thanks for your insight into these displays. (PS, is there a thread on the 'secret menu' in the standard 2.0 display ... hold top left button when turning bike on to access?)

3. The motor; well, you 'can' replace the magnets (as I have done) when they go rusty (all 2.0 will likely suffer this). I have noticed that on x-scooters they appear to be advertising the motor itself (not rim/magnets) for ~$400 EU. But, is this so specialised that we could not find a hub motor in the future to fit this? I would worry about that central axle arrangement, but I don't think it would prevent 're-manufacture' with a hub motor from elsewhere.

So, I think 17" rims with hub motors will be replaceable. They are around E1000. Here is a 8000W for E 800;
Link entfernt, da tot.

4. Frame; The frame is a rusty piece of poor design, BUT it is just mild steel, so, stripping it down, I believe there is very little on it that could not be re-welded, or even fabricated from scratch. The main rust concern is that rear joint on the swing arm, and I think the design is so poor you might as well wait for it to get too bad, then weld in new parts. That is my feeling, how do you see it?

5. Springs; I think we've all replaced the rear spring by now? The front springs, there are some alternative struts that could be made to fit. I have bought a spare set off a low mileage Benelli BN125 (because my son has one, anyway) but not got around to fitting yet (I changed the fork oil and this improved the ride enough, for now) so I think that can be done.

6. Brakes; We've found alternatives, listed in the forum. Which reminds me I probably need to change my discs, they seem to be grabbing and vibrating at the front, now. What is the current recommendation?

7. Seat/tail; hopefully, the base will survive any eventuality I can imagine, and can be re-cushioned and reskinned. The tail can be replaced with a tail-tidy, I have an aftermarket one that will fit, just waiting to go on. Not got around to it.

...... I believe all of those things can therefore be dealt with, and we move on to the things that can't be :?: replaced.

8. Foot rests; I did see some cheap ones and tempted to acquire, but missed the chance. There is a 'right' one on x-scooters for ~E 80. But no point replacing 'one'. I read here someone broke theirs and Dayi replaced (IIRC)? Mine are flaking off, maybe a good idea to remove and powder coat, but probably as expensive as buying a new one? The distant alternative would be to fabricate a replacement in steel/Al place?

9. Lights; Indicators are easy aftermarket replacements. Thank you to those who have re-engineered the internals of the headlight. I think my main concern is the plastics that make the headlight up, so that brings me on to the elephant-in-the-room .....

10. PLASTIC TRIM; OMG, where do I begin? All made of brittle Chinesylene, and irreplaceable!

My conclusion (I am interested if you agree) that in the case of this bike there is no point holding ANY spare stock of anything because everything that 'needs' to be there to make the bike be usable can be replaced or repaired. The cost of a spare set of trim panels you might never use would be absurd, so, not that, I am not going to buy spare panels. I already have a few that could do with replacing, but it does not affect the bike.

I suspect the answer to the 'plastic trim' question is then to figure out 3D printing? Maybe? I'm not that good with 3D models, but I hope some here might be?

What are your thoughts on this?
